Free Online Line Numberer, Add or Remove Numbers From Lines

Number a list of lines in your browser. Set where the numbering starts and how far it steps, pad the numbers so the column stays straight, pick the separator, and decide what happens to blank lines. The same tool removes numbering that is already there.

How to Number Lines of Text

A few steps, and nothing is uploaded.

1
Paste your list One item per line. A .txt file can be dropped onto the box instead.
2
Set the start and the step Most lists start at 1 and step by 1. A step of 10 gives 10, 20, 30; a step of minus one counts down.
3
Choose padding and separator Padding keeps the text aligned once the numbers reach double figures. The separator is the bit between the number and the line.
4
Copy, or switch to remove Take the result with the copy button. To undo numbering on a list you already have, switch the first menu to remove.

What to Know About Numbering Lines

Including what the remover can and cannot recognise.

Padding is about alignment, not about looks. Without it, line 9 and line 10 start their text in different columns and the whole list goes ragged. With automatic padding the width is worked out from the last number, so a list of 95 items pads to two and a list of 1200 pads to four.
Zero padding is for sorting, not for reading. 007 sorts next to 008 in a plain alphabetical sort, which is why file names use it. In a document it reads oddly, so spaces are the default and zeros are a switch.
The remover recognises common patterns, not every pattern. It takes off a number at the start of a line followed by a full stop, bracket, colon, dash or whitespace. Numbering written another way, or numbers that are part of the text itself, are left alone on purpose.
Removing numbers cannot know what was a number and what was data. A line that genuinely begins with a figure, such as a price list or a year, looks exactly like a numbered line. Check the result before replacing the original, especially on lists of amounts.

Key Features & Capabilities

What this tool does, and what it deliberately does not.

Start and step Begin at any number, step by any amount, and count down with a negative step.
Automatic padding Width taken from the largest number, so the text after the numbers stays in one column.
Removes numbering The same page strips numbering that is already there, for the lists somebody else numbered.
Six separators Full stop, bracket, dash, colon, tab or a plain space, because every document has its own habit.
Blank line choice Keep them unnumbered, number them anyway, or drop them first. Three different wishes, three options.
Nothing leaves the tab Lists of names, tasks or customers are numbered here without being uploaded anywhere.

About the Line Numberer

Numbering a list is the kind of job that takes thirty seconds by hand for ten lines and half an hour for three hundred. The half hour is not the typing, it is the renumbering after something is inserted in the middle, which is where mistakes creep in and nobody notices until a meeting.

The options here exist because lists are used for different things. A set of instructions wants 1, 2, 3 with a full stop. A file naming scheme wants 001, 002, 003 with zeros so that a plain sort keeps them in order. A survey wants 10, 20, 30 so that questions can be added later without renumbering. All of those are the same tool with different settings.

The remove mode is there because numbering is often somebody else's decision. A list arrives already numbered, you need it plain to paste into a system that numbers it again, and stripping the numbers by hand on three hundred lines is exactly the sort of task that produces an off by one error at line 174.

Frequently Asked Questions

Padding, blank lines, counting down and removing numbers.

Set the padding to three digits and switch on "Pad with zeros". That gives 001, 002 and so on, which is what you want for file names because it keeps them in order in a plain alphabetical sort.

Yes. Put the starting number in the start box and a negative number in the step box, for example start at 50 and step by minus one. The counters under the options show the first and last number so you can check before copying.

By default they are kept but not numbered, which is usually what people want in a document with paragraphs. You can also number them like any other line, or remove them before numbering so that the count is continuous.

It can, if your lines genuinely begin with numbers. A price list, a list of years or a set of measurements all look like numbered lines. The removal only strips a leading number followed by a separator, but you should still read the result before replacing the original.

Yes. The numbers are ordinary characters in the result, not a display effect, so they survive copy and paste into any application.
