How to Fade a Video In and Out

What a Fade Actually Costs

The parts people find out afterwards.

A fade out has to know where the end is. It is not a length counted backwards by the player, it is a moment written into the file. That moment is taken from the video you dropped, so if you trim the clip afterwards the fade will be in the wrong place. Fade last, trim first.
The sound does not fade by itself. Darkening the picture does nothing to the audio, so the two are separate instructions. They are kept the same length here, which is why the checkbox is on by default.
A fade longer than the clip is not a fade. If the two fades add up to more than the video lasts, they overlap and the middle never reaches full brightness. This page tells you when you are close to that.
The fade is baked in. The darkened frames are written as darkened frames, so there is no switching it off later. Keep the original if you might change your mind about the length.
The picture has to be encoded again. There is no copy route for a colour change, because the colours live inside the compressed picture data. Expect it to take real time, and use the quality setting to decide what that costs.
The work happens on your own machine. Your video is opened by this page, not sent anywhere. That is why there is no upload bar, no queue and no waiting for a server. It is also why a big file leans on your own processor: nothing is being done for you somewhere else.

About the Video Fade In and Out

A fade looks like one thing and is really two. The picture is darkened towards black or white over a number of seconds, and the sound is brought down over the same seconds. Tools that only do the first are the reason so many clips end with a black screen that is still talking.

The other half of the job is arithmetic. A fade out is not a length counted back from the end by the player: it is a moment written into the file, and that moment is the full length of the clip minus the length of the fade. Get the length wrong and the fade lands in the middle or never starts. Here the length is read from the file you dropped rather than from anything typed on the page, which is why trimming after fading puts the fade in the wrong place. Trim first.

Lengths are a matter of taste, but not entirely. Under half a second reads as a cut rather than a fade. Over three seconds reads as slow unless the footage is slow too. And if the two fades together come to more than the clip lasts, the middle never reaches full brightness, which is why the strip on this page draws them against the real length.
