The Characters You Cannot See

Why a word you can read refuses to match when you search for it.

Character Code Where it comes from, and what it breaks
Non breaking space U+00A0 Word processors and HTML. Looks exactly like a space, is not one, so a search for "New York" misses it and a CSV column splits in the wrong place.
Zero width space U+200B Web pages that allow breaking inside long words. Invisible, and splits a word in two for search and sorting.
Soft hyphen U+00AD Hyphenation in PDFs and print layouts. Shows only when the word breaks, so copied text carries hyphens nobody can see.
Byte order mark U+FEFF The first character of many exported files. Breaks the first column name of a CSV and the first key of a JSON file.
Narrow and thin spaces U+2009 U+202F Typesetting, and French punctuation rules. Numbers formatted for print arrive with them inside, and then fail to parse as numbers.
This page tells you which of these it found before it removes them. That matters more than the removal: once you know a column of numbers is full of narrow spaces, you know why the spreadsheet is treating it as text, and you can fix the export instead of cleaning it by hand every week.

How to Clean Up Pasted Text

A few steps, and nothing is uploaded.

1
Paste the messy text From a PDF, a Word document, an email or a web page. You can also drop a .txt file onto the box.
2
Read the note under the options If there are invisible characters in the text, it says which ones and how many. That is often the whole answer.
3
Switch on what you need The space and line rules are on by default because they are nearly always wanted. Quotes, accents and the ASCII rule are off, because they change meaning.
4
Copy the clean text Take the result with the copy button, or save it as a .txt file. The original is still in the left box if you want to try different switches.

What to Know Before You Clean

Including the characters that look like spaces and are not.

Flattening accents changes words, not just their look. It turns café into cafe and Müller into Muller, which is right for a URL or a file name and wrong for a letter to Mr Müller. It is off by default for that reason, and the German sharp s becomes ss rather than disappearing.
Dropping everything that is not ASCII is a blunt instrument. With that switch on, Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic, Chinese and emoji are removed rather than converted, because there is nothing to convert them to. Use it only when the thing receiving the text genuinely cannot take anything else.
This is not a spell checker and not a grammar tool. It changes the shape of text: spacing, invisible characters, quote style. It never changes a word for another word, and it never corrects anything. Your browser already has a spell checker.
Tabs are left alone unless you ask. In indented code or in data pasted from a spreadsheet, a tab is meaningful, and turning it into a space quietly destroys the structure. The switch is there when you want it, and off when you do not.

Key Features & Capabilities

What this tool does, and what it deliberately does not.

Finds what is invisible Zero width spaces, non breaking spaces, soft hyphens, byte order marks and the narrow spaces that break numbers.
Every rule is a switch Nothing is forced. Turn off the rules you do not want and the text is left exactly as it was in that respect.
Blank line control Leave them, allow at most one in a row, or remove them all, plus a separate trim of the top and bottom.
Quotes and dashes Curly quotes, long dashes and ellipsis characters become the plain ones that code, CSV and old systems expect.
Counted, not guessed Characters in, characters out and the difference, so you can see how much was actually wrong.
Stays in your browser Text that needs cleaning is often text that should not be uploaded. This page never receives it.

About the Text Cleaner

Text that was written somewhere else arrives with things in it that nobody typed. A PDF puts soft hyphens where words were broken across lines. A word processor turns straight quotes into curly ones and two hyphens into a dash. A web page inserts zero width spaces so that long words can wrap. None of it is visible, and all of it causes trouble the moment the text is searched, sorted, imported or compared.

This page collects the fixes in one place and keeps each one separate. The spacing rules are on by default because almost everyone wants them; the rules that change meaning, such as flattening accents or forcing plain ASCII, start off. That split is deliberate: a cleaner that quietly removes accents from names is worse than no cleaner at all.

The part people find most useful is not the cleaning but the report. Before anything is removed, the page says which invisible characters it found and how many. That turns "the spreadsheet will not add up this column" into "the export is putting narrow spaces inside the numbers", which is something you can go and fix at the source.

Frequently Asked Questions

Invisible characters, quotes, accents and what is left alone.

Almost always an invisible character inside it. A zero width space splits the word for the search; a non breaking space is not the space you typed in the search box. Paste the text here and the note under the options will tell you which ones are present.

Collapsing turns several spaces in a row anywhere in the line into one. Trimming removes the spaces at the start and end of each line and leaves the inside alone. They are separate switches because indented text often needs one and not the other.

Switch on the quotes rule and curly quotes become straight ones, which is usually what the system on the other end expects. If the problem is quotes inside a field rather than the style of quote, that is a CSV escaping question and the CSV tools are the right place for it.

No. The left box keeps what you pasted and the result is built separately, so you can change the switches as many times as you like and compare. Nothing is saved and nothing is sent anywhere.

Only through the plain ASCII switch, which removes every character outside the basic set, emoji included. There is no emoji only rule, because the line between an emoji and a symbol is blurrier than it looks.
