How to Count the Days in a Month or Year

Three steps, and the third is the one people come for.

1
Choose a month or a whole year The month list and the year box are both there. Switching to a whole year keeps the same year, so you can look at a month and then at the year around it.
2
Read the length Thirty one, thirty, or twenty eight or twenty nine for February. The leap year rule is applied in full, so 1900 gives 28 and 2000 gives 29.
3
Open the weekday counts How many Mondays, how many Saturdays, with the actual dates listed. That is usually the real question behind how many days are in this month.

What to Know About Month Lengths

Why the lengths are uneven, and what it costs.

The month lengths are an accident of Roman history, not a design. The pattern 31, 28, 31, 30 has no mathematical basis. The Roman calendar started in March, which is why September, October, November and December carry the Latin words for seven, eight, nine and ten while sitting in the ninth to twelfth places. February was left short because it was last in the year, and it stayed short when January and February were moved to the front.
February needs the full leap year rule, not just divisible by four. A year divisible by four is a leap year unless it is also divisible by one hundred, unless it is also divisible by four hundred. February 1900 had 28 days and February 2000 had 29. Code that only checks for four works perfectly for ninety nine years at a time, which is exactly why the mistake survives.
Weekday counts are never even, and that matters for pay. A 31 day month has three weekdays that occur five times and four that occur four times. A 28 day February has exactly four of each, which happens only in a non leap year. Anyone paid by the day, or running a shop open six days a week, feels that difference directly, and it is the reason this page counts every weekday rather than only the total.
Quarters are not equal either. The first quarter has 90 days in a normal year and 91 in a leap year. The second has 91, and the third and fourth have 92 each. Treating the year as four equal quarters of 91.25 days gives a quarter on quarter comparison that is wrong before any data is involved, and the split is given here so the real figures are easy to use.
Thirty days is a convention, not a calendar fact. Interest, rent and some contracts are worked out on a thirty day month and a 360 day year because that makes the arithmetic easy. It is a deliberate fiction and it does not match any real month except April, June, September and November. When a date matters, use the calendar; when the convention matters, use the convention, but know which one you are in.

About Month and Year Lengths

Months have different lengths for historical reasons rather than mathematical ones. The Roman calendar began in March, which is why September, October, November and December are named after the Latin for seven, eight, nine and ten despite being the ninth to twelfth months. February sat at the end of the year and absorbed the leftover days, and it kept its short length when January and February were moved to the front. The pattern that results, 31 and 30 alternating with a short February, has survived two thousand years of reform attempts.

February is the one month whose length depends on the year, and that is where mistakes happen. The rule is not simply every fourth year. A year is a leap year if it divides by four, unless it also divides by one hundred, unless it also divides by four hundred. February 1900 had 28 days; February 2000 had 29; February 2100 will have 28. Code that checks only for divisibility by four is correct for ninety nine consecutive years, which is long enough for the error to be written, shipped and forgotten.

The more useful question is usually not how many days a month has but how the days fall. A 31 day month contains three weekdays that occur five times and four that occur four times, and which ones depends on the day the month starts. That decides how many paydays, how many market days, how many deliveries. February in a non leap year is the only month that contains exactly four of every weekday, which is why it is the only month where this question has a boring answer.

Quarters deserve the same honesty. In a normal year the first quarter is 90 days, the second 91, the third and fourth 92 each. Dividing a year into four equal pieces of 91.25 days makes quarter on quarter comparisons wrong before the data is even collected, by roughly two per cent between the shortest and longest quarter. The real figures are given here so that correction can be applied rather than guessed at.

In a normal year, 90, 91, 92 and 92. In a leap year the first quarter has 91. They are not equal, which matters for any quarter on quarter comparison.

Because 31 days is four weeks plus three days, so three of the seven weekdays occur five times. Which three depends on the weekday the month starts on.
