How to Analyse the Text in a PDF

Three steps, and the file never leaves your computer.

1
Step 1

Drop the PDF in. It is read where it already is; nothing is uploaded.

2
Step 2

Choose how many words to list and a reading speed, then press Analyse.

3
Step 3

Read the numbers, copy the summary, or download the whole word list as a CSV.

What It Does, and What It Cannot Do

How the counting works, and where a PDF makes it awkward.

No two programs give the same word count. Word, Google Docs and this page all draw the line between a word and a mark in slightly different places, especially around hyphens, numbers and initials. Use the number to compare drafts of the same document rather than to settle an argument about a limit.
A scanned page counts as nothing, and that is correct. A page made of images carries pictures of text, not text, so there is nothing to count. Any page with no text is named in the page table, which is usually how people discover half their document is a scan.
Reading time is an estimate, not a measurement. It divides the word count by the speed you choose. Dense technical writing takes longer than the number says and a list of names takes less.
Headers, footers and page numbers are text too. They are counted, because the page genuinely contains them. If a running header repeats on every page you will see it near the top of the word list, which is a quick way to spot it.

Key Features & Capabilities

Designed for speed, privacy, and precision.

Never uploaded

The document is read by your own browser. A manuscript, a thesis or a contract under embargo stays exactly where it is.

The numbers that matter

Words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and averages per page, all in one place.

Reading and speaking time

An estimate at the speed you choose, plus a separate figure for reading aloud, which is what presenters actually need.

Most used words

A frequency list with the very common words optionally left out, so what is left tells you something about the document.

Page by page

Every page with its own word count, and any page with no text at all named plainly as a scan or an image.

A CSV you can work with

The full word list downloads as a CSV, ready for a spreadsheet, without the file ever leaving the machine.

About the PDF Text Statistics Analyzer

This tool reads the text out of a PDF and counts it: words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs, averages for each page, and an estimate of how long the document takes to read or to read aloud. It also lists the words that appear most often, which says more about a document than any single number does.

PDFs make counting harder than it sounds. A PDF does not store words or even lines; it stores fragments of text placed at coordinates on a page. Putting those fragments back into sentences is guesswork, and different tools guess differently. The counting here is deliberately plain and explained on the page, so the number means something you can check rather than something you have to trust.

The page by page table is the part people end up using most. It shows where the words actually are, and it names any page with no text at all. That is normally the moment somebody discovers that a third of the document they were sent is a scan, which no amount of counting will fix and which an OCR tool will.

Everything runs in your browser. There is no upload, no queue and no account, so a thesis, a manuscript or a contract under embargo can be measured without it travelling anywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Word counts, reading time, scanned pages and what the numbers mean.

Drop the file onto this page and press Analyse. Every page is read and the words, characters, sentences and averages appear together, along with a list of the most used words. Nothing is uploaded, so it works on a document you cannot send anywhere.

Because every program draws the line between a word and a mark differently, particularly around hyphens, numbers, initials and footnote markers. A difference of a percent or two on a long document is normal. The number here is consistent with itself, which is what makes it useful for comparing drafts.

The pages are almost certainly images from a scanner or a photograph. They look like text to you and are pictures to every computer, so there is nothing to count. An OCR tool converts them into real text first.

Yes, because they are genuinely part of the page. A repeating header shows up near the top of the most used words list, which makes it easy to spot and to allow for.

Yes. The Word list CSV button downloads every word with its count, ready to open in Excel, Numbers or Sheets. It is built in your browser like everything else here.

No. The whole analysis happens inside your browser, which you can prove by disconnecting from the internet and using the page anyway.
