Free Online Text Scrambler For Letters, Words and Lines

Scramble text in your browser at whichever level you need. Shuffle the letters inside each word while keeping the first and last in place, so the words are still readable, or shuffle whole words, sentences or lines. A seed makes any result repeatable, which is what puzzles, quizzes and test data need.

How to Scramble Text

A few steps, and nothing is uploaded.

1
Paste the text A paragraph, a list or a whole document. A .txt file can be dropped onto the box instead.
2
Choose the level Letters inside words keeps the text readable. Shuffling words, sentences or lines destroys the meaning, which is sometimes the point.
3
Set the seed if you need it again With a seed on, the same text and the same seed always give the same result, so a puzzle can be reproduced. Press new seed for a different mix.
4
Copy the result The counters show how many words actually changed, which is useful because short words often cannot be scrambled at all.

What to Know About Scrambling Text

Why the first and last letter matter, and what a seed is for.

Keeping the first and last letter is what makes scrambled words readable. The often quoted claim that word order inside a word does not matter is overstated, but the effect is real for short familiar words when the ends are fixed. That is why it is the default here, and why the other letter mode is much harder to read.
Short words cannot be scrambled, and the counter says so. A three letter word with its first and last letter fixed has only the middle letter left, so there is nothing to rearrange. The minimum length setting simply says how short a word has to be before it is skipped entirely.
A seed makes randomness repeatable, which sounds like a contradiction and is not. The shuffle is produced from the seed by arithmetic, so the same seed always produces the same shuffle. Set a seed and you can hand somebody a puzzle and reproduce the answer. Switch the seed off and every edit gives a fresh mix.
Scrambling cannot be undone. There is no unscramble button anywhere, here or elsewhere, because the original order is simply gone. If you need the original back, keep a copy before you scramble it. With a seed you can regenerate the same scramble, which is not the same as reversing it.
Punctuation and capitals are handled separately from the letters. By default a full stop stays attached to its word and a capital stays at the start, so the result still looks like a sentence. Switching those off produces a more thorough scramble that no longer reads as prose at all.

Key Features & Capabilities

What this tool does, and what it deliberately does not.

Seven levels Inner letters, all letters, words within a sentence, words across the text, sentences, lines or every character.
Repeatable with a seed The same text and seed give the same result every time, which is what a puzzle or a test fixture needs.
Still readable Keeping the first and last letter leaves words recognisable, which is the whole appeal of the effect.
Short words skipped Words under a length you choose are left alone, since there is nothing in them to rearrange.
Shape preserved Capitals and attached punctuation can stay in place, so the output still looks like writing.
Nothing is uploaded The scrambling happens in this tab, so drafts and test data never leave your computer.

About the Text Scrambler

Scrambled text has more uses than it first appears. It makes puzzles and classroom exercises. It makes placeholder copy that is obviously placeholder, unlike lorem ipsum which people occasionally publish by accident. It makes test data that exercises a layout without showing anybody real customer names.

The famous version is the one where only the inner letters move. It circulates as a claim about reading research that is considerably stronger than the research supports, but the effect itself is genuine enough for short familiar words, and it is by far the most useful mode because the result is still readable.

The seed is the part that turns a toy into a tool. Random output you cannot reproduce is fine for amusement and useless for anything else: you cannot hand out a puzzle and keep the answer, and you cannot write a test that expects a particular result. Deriving the shuffle from a seed costs nothing and makes both possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

Seeds, readability, punctuation and unscrambling.

No. The original order is gone, and no tool can recover it, because many different originals would produce the same scramble. Keep a copy of the original before scrambling anything you need.

It makes the result repeatable. The same text with the same seed always scrambles identically, so you can reproduce a puzzle later or write a test that expects a particular output. Switch it off if you want a different mix on every change.

Either they were shorter than the minimum length, or there was nothing to rearrange. A word of three letters with its ends fixed has a single middle letter, so it comes out the same however often you shuffle it.

Partly. It works reasonably well for short familiar words in ordinary sentences, and much less well for long or unusual words. The widely shared version of the claim overstates what the research actually showed.

Yes, choose the lines level. Each line stays exactly as it was and only their order changes, which is what you want for shuffling a list of questions or a deck of prompts.
