What a Watermark Is Actually For

It deters, it does not protect.

A watermark deters casual copying. It does not protect anything. Anyone determined can crop it, clone it out or paint over it, and there are tools that do a decent job automatically. What it does is make casual reuse awkward and make the source obvious when a picture travels, which is usually the real goal.

Tiling is much harder to remove than a corner mark. A single mark in a corner is one crop away from gone. A faint tile across the whole frame has to be removed from every part of the picture, which is enough work that most people move on. It is also more intrusive, and that is the trade.

Keep it faint. Twelve to twenty five per cent is the useful range. A watermark loud enough to spoil the picture defeats the purpose of showing the picture. If it can be read when looked for, it is doing its job.

This is not proof of ownership. A name burned into pixels proves nothing on its own. Keep your originals, keep the camera files with their dates, and use the watermark as a signpost rather than as evidence.
