Free Online Savings Goal Calculator, Monthly Amount or Months to Reach It
Turn a savings goal into a plan. Give the target, what you have already, and a return, then either say how many months you have and get the monthly amount needed, or say what you can save each month and get how long it will take. Interest on the balance is included, so the plan is not just the target divided by the months.

The obvious plan is target divided by months. It is also wrong, whenever your savings earn
anything at all, because each amount you put away grows before the deadline arrives. The earlier
contributions earn the most, so the true monthly figure is lower than the simple division, and
the gap widens with the rate and the length of the plan.
This counts that growth, and it works both ways round. Tell it the deadline and it gives
the monthly amount; tell it the monthly amount and it gives the time. Whatever you have already
saved is grown too and counted towards the target, so the plan starts from where you actually
are rather than from zero.
The return is your assumption, and a cash plan uses zero. Money in a plain account earns
little, so leaving the rate at zero gives the honest target-over-months answer for cash under a
mattress. A higher rate assumes an investment, and real investments do not return a steady rate,
so treat the figure as a plan rather than a promise. No rate is fetched from anywhere.
Where Your Input Goes
Nowhere. And you can check that yourself.
Your goal and balance are worked out in your browser and never sent anywhere.
It is all done by your own browser. Press F12, open the Network tab, and use the tool:
the page fetches its own code and nothing else. Or load the page, turn off your wifi, and
carry on. It still runs, because there was never a server in the middle.

What to Know About Savings Plans
Including the things this tool cannot do.
Target divided by months is too high whenever savings earn interest. Each amount you put away grows before the deadline, so the true monthly figure is lower. This counts that growth, which the simple division ignores, and the difference widens with the rate and the length of the plan.
It works both ways round. Give the deadline for the monthly amount, or the monthly amount for the time. Whatever you have already saved is grown and counted towards the target, so the plan starts from where you are, not from zero.
Leave the rate at zero for a cash plan. Money in a plain account earns little, so zero gives the honest target-over-months answer. A higher rate assumes an investment, which does not return a steady figure, so the result is a plan, not a promise. No rate is fetched.
If a goal is unreachable, it says so. A monthly amount too small to reach a large target even in a hundred years is flagged rather than shown as a huge number of months. That is the sign to save more each month.

About the Savings Goal Calculator
A savings goal is a target and a deadline, and the plan between them is where people either overshoot the monthly figure or underestimate the time. This calculator turns the goal into a concrete plan and does it in whichever direction you need: the amount to save each month, or the months a chosen amount will take.
It counts the growth that the obvious sum ignores. Dividing the target by the months assumes the money sits there doing nothing; in reality each contribution earns before the deadline, so the true monthly figure is lower and the wait is shorter. Whatever you have already put aside is grown and counted towards the target as well.
The return is your assumption. Leave it at zero for a plain cash plan and you get the honest target-over-months answer; raise it to model an investment, remembering that real returns are not steady, so the output is a plan rather than a promise. No rate is fetched, nothing is uploaded, and if a goal simply cannot be reached at the amount given, the tool says so instead of printing a silly number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why the simple division is too high, and how interest shortens the wait.
Because your savings earn while they wait. Each contribution grows before the deadline, so you need to put in a little less than the plain division suggests. The gap grows with the return rate and the length of the plan. Set the rate to zero and the two match.
Yes. Switch to the second mode, enter what you can save each month, and it gives the number of months, with interest shortening the wait. If the amount is too small to reach the goal within a hundred years, it says so.
For a plain savings account, near zero, which gives the honest cash answer. For an investment, your own estimate, remembering that real returns are not steady. The tool never fetches or predicts a rate; the figure is a plan, not a promise.
Yes. It is grown at the same rate and counted towards the target, so the plan starts from where you actually are. Leave it at zero to plan from scratch.
No. It is worked out in your browser, with history and saved setups on this device only. You can confirm it in the Network tab or by working offline.
