What This Can and Cannot Separate

Colour, not subjects. Read this before you try it on a portrait.

This separates by colour, not by subject. It finds pixels close to one colour and removes them. That is exactly right for a product on white, a logo, a scanned signature or a green screen, and exactly wrong for a person standing in a park. Nothing here recognises what is in the picture.

Hair and soft edges are where it shows. Every strand that blends into the background is partly background, and a rule based on colour has to choose. Softening the edge helps, and there is a limit: the tools that handle hair well use trained models, and no honest browser tool does it in a few hundred lines.

The result needs PNG or WebP. Transparency cannot survive JPEG, which fills it with black. If you are replacing the background with a colour instead, any format is fine.

A subject the same colour as the background will be eaten. A white shirt on a white background is one object to this tool. Lowering the tolerance protects the shirt and leaves background behind; there is no setting that gets both.
